Description


The Deputy General Counsel - Litigation will manage CBRE's U.S. and international docket of litigation and pre-litigation matters. Direct responsibilities include assessing the risk/opportunity of litigation matters, developing strategic responses to litigation, ensuring quality control of the litigation process and procedures, and reviewing key briefs and other legal documents as appropriate.

Among the requirements for the position, successful candidates must have extensive in-house and outside litigation management experience and demonstrate executive presence to interact with high-level company and business leaders. The position reports to the General Counsel.


RESPONSIBILITIES


Advise and collaborate with Finance organization around proper budgeting, reserve setting and coordination with outside auditors on significant matters.

Periodic reporting to audit committee of the board and interface with the company's outside accountants.

Work closely with Risk Management around our insurance programs including coverage issues related to litigation.

Manage a team of three U.S.-based litigators and work closely with country-based counsel.

Manage all processes and workflow relating to litigation, including e-discovery, litigation holds, alternative dispute resolution processes and collections.

Develop proactive strategies to prevent litigation, including training programs for in-house lawyers and management regarding e-documents, document retention, litigation hold, privileged documents and other pertinent areas as required by business needs (e.g., antitrust, financial/fiduciary responsibility issues, etc.).

Oversee outside counsel management procedures to identify opportunities to unbundle services to achieve maximum value across various stages of litigation; enforce billing guidelines and consolidate law firms, as appropriate; and structure innovative partnerships with counsel to align incentives for cost savings and quality improvement.

Liaise with business and upper level executives on litigation issues and settlement/mediation process.

Provide advice and counseling to executives and upper management for external investigations, hearings or presentations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS


At least 15 years of litigation experience, including at least five years of in-house experience supervising outside counsel and monitoring a significant litigation docket.

Familiarity with technology including matter management and budgeting systems.

Strong financial acumen and work ethic.

Effective interpersonal and communication skills including creativity, teamwork, strategic thinking and problem solving.

Knowledge of e-discovery and litigation hold requirements.

Proven ability to interact, develop and discuss strategy with upper management as well as with people from various cultural and educational backgrounds.

Strong legal analysis skills with the ability to integrate legal advice and business knowledge, while providing balanced advice regarding risks and benefits.

Texas Bar membership required.

J.D. from major law school required; strong academic credentials.
