As New York City came to a standstill, lessons in leadership were on every corner. The Pope arrives and transforms his institution simply by going back to its roots in the Bible saying, “Who am I to judge?” And, “You must welcome and show love and compassion to all.” Then, John Boehner gives up trying to bring the opposing factions of his party together to make deals and pass legislation. One wonders why he could not rally them around the core values that they all believe. Leadership lessons? When Steve Jobs returned to Apple or Howard Schultz returned to Starbucks, they became case studies of organizations returning to their roots and focusing on what made them successful in the first place. They embodied their organization’s core principles. The Media shows us every day what happens when you concentrate and talk about the problems – nothing. Watching this week evolve it is obvious, right or wrong, successful leaders concentrate on the solutions.
