There is nothing a Board of Directors loves more than a “proven leader.” The announcement of David Taylor, 35-year veteran of P&G as the new CEO starting in November attests to staying power. The WSJ article on “High Potential Leaders” recommends that if your company taps you as a rising star, you should alert your boss about your career aspirations and ask, “How do I make that happen here?” Like Taylor’s career at P&G, “rising stars often enjoy access to corporate leaders, along with opportunities for functional and global roles.” On the negative side they can, “become too closely identified with a single industry at a time when businesses value broad management experience.” Every January, SelectLeaders Network contacts all registered job seekers to update their resume, even if they’re not actively looking for a job, to assess what you accomplished last year, and what you want to achieve in the year ahead. When you feel you cannot grow anymore, that is when you need to leave.
